  17.      Several times each year I find a letter from a reader with a child
  18. suffering from Rett Syndrome and plea to write about the International Rett
  19. Syndrome Foundation (IRSA).  Rett Syndrome is a very rare neurological
  20. condition that only strikes young girls, first described in 1965, severely
  21. affecting their development.  Since, I could find little to write about, I
  22. usually passed over the question.  However according to Ms. Kathy Hunter,
  23. President of IRSA "based upon population estimates performed in other
  24. countries there may be 10,000 undiagnosed cases in the U.S." and that perhaps
  25. it is the cause of "1/4 of all profound mental retardation in young females".
